As soon as the All Black star landed in Ireland after the autumn tests, he donned a microphone and vest as he performed tee-kicking duties during Leinster’s away win over Ulster.

“Yes, everything was in place. It’s great,” said the 27-year-old.

“Over the years I have had the luxury of knowing and interacting with many international guys. They were great. Actually, that week, or four or five days that they were in camp, being with the guys at the academy and getting to know some of those guys was really meaningful. So it’s been good.

“I was in Italy after being ruled out of the last Test with a little knee problem, and I’ve been in contact with Leo (Cullen) and Guy (Easterby) for a while since I signed. And Leo asked a question: would you like to come up? And I said, ‘Yes, I would like that.’

“The sooner I can come in and immerse myself in the environment around other players and coaches, and I think it was important to get comfortable with all the things as quickly as possible.

“I knew my return to the game would probably be in Bristol, and I could get three or four extra days, and it would help my performance at the weekend.”

The decision certainly paid off at Ashton Gate on Sunday, when Barrett replaced Ciarán Frawley at half-time, who retired with a back injury and made his debut at centre, while Robbie Henshaw moved to outside center and Garry Ringrose moved to the wing . and Jimmy O’Brien at fullback.

His impact was immediate, setting up a great try for Sam Prendergast before finding a gap to dive into for one of his own in Leinster’s bonus point victory.

Despite the complicated changes that came with his entry into the game, Barrett says his experience playing in different positions throughout his career has really helped him in his favored central position.

“Yes, in some ways I was a jack of all trades and master of none for a number of years there, but I feel like it probably served me well for where I am today. I feel like I’ve always been there, but I’m 27 and I feel like my best rugby is ahead of me, which is positive.

“Even in Test matches, playing left, right, 10, lots of 15s and 12s gives you a good perspective and understanding of what the guy inside is asking or needs on the field – it’s the same with other guys in similar positions.

“If you try to solidify yourself in one position, whether you’re 12 or full-back, then you get a good insight into what your wingers need, or what your 10 or nine need. So I feel like I’m in Now I’m in a position where I understand the game quite well, and hopefully it will serve me well for the rest of my career.”

Prendergast and Barrett matched up well in the second half and Barrett was the latest to praise the 21-year-old out-half.

‘He’s a breath of fresh air, a good young boy with a grown-up head on his shoulders. The best years are clearly ahead of him, but he is clearly very confident, stands behind his abilities and nothing seems to faze him.

“Granted, he will tell you that he still has a lot of growing to do and that he is doing a lot of good things. It’s great that he keeps making mistakes because that’s what you need at that age.

“There have been great 10s all over the world and obviously Johnny’s (Sexton) have gone before him with Leinster and Ireland, and I think everyone here is probably trying to find the next Johnny Sexton, but there are some great young Irish 10s out there : you’ We have Ciarán (Frawley), Jack Crowley, Sam, and it’s good that we can celebrate all three of them instead of trying to compare and shoot one down to elevate the other, so they keep growing.”

Barrett has strong family ties to the county and to Meath, where he spent some time in the early 2000s when his family moved to Oldcastle, while his father, Kevin, managed a farm and played rugby with Buccaneers.

He fondly remembers the advice and practices his mother Robyn taught him and his brothers, which were a great help in their career development.

“She said, ‘If you want to be good at sport and enjoy it, you have to be fit.’ And I think all she made us do was pick us up from school, pack our bags, give us a pair of running shoes and let us run home. That might have put us in a good position. From the top of the road it was 3.5km, so for a 10/11 year old it’s quite a run.”
